You don't have to fix yourself before you can care for yourself
I hear a version of this all the time.
"Once I lose the weight..."
"Once I stop emotional eating..."
"Once I get my life together..."
"Then I'll finally feel better about myself."
It's such a familiar story that many of us don't even question it.
We come to believe that self-care is something we earn after we've "fixed" ourselves.
But what if we've been approaching it backwards?
What if caring for yourself isn't the reward for healing...
What if it's the pathway to healing?
I'll let you in on something.
I have a gym membership that I happily pay for every month. Some months I go regularly. Other months, life happens and I make it to one or two classes. The past few years have been full of stress and big life changes, and yes, my clothes fit a little differently than they used to.
There are also days when I'm so immersed in writing or creating something that I look up at two o'clock and realize I've forgotten to eat lunch.
I'm not sharing this because I'm proud of those habits.
I'm sharing it because I'm human.
Just like you, I'm learning to notice when I've drifted away from caring for myself—not with criticism, but with curiosity.
Think about someone you love.
If they were struggling, would you wait until they had everything figured out before offering them compassion?
Would you tell them they had to become more disciplined before they deserved kindness?
Of course not.
Yet so many of us speak to ourselves in ways we would never dream of speaking to someone we care about.
When we miss a workout.
When we eat past fullness.
When we feel anxious.
When we're exhausted.
When we slip back into an old habit.
Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?"
What if we gently asked,
"What do I need right now?"
It's a small shift in words.
But it opens the door to a completely different relationship with yourself.
One that's based on understanding instead of criticism.
Support instead of punishment.
Curiosity instead of shame.
I've learned that lasting change rarely grows from feeling bad enough about ourselves.
It grows from feeling safe enough to be honest.
Safe enough to notice what's really going on beneath the surface.
Safe enough to respond with care instead of control.
That doesn't mean lowering your expectations.
It means changing the way you meet yourself along the way.

A Gentle Reflection
Think about one area of your life where you've been waiting to feel "good enough."
Maybe it's taking a walk.
Buying clothes that fit comfortably.
Asking for support.
Taking a day off.
Speaking kindly to yourself.
Now ask yourself:
If I believed I was already worthy of care today, what is one small thing I might do differently?

You don't have to have everything figured out before you deserve compassion.
You don't have to heal perfectly before you begin caring for yourself.
You are allowed to start exactly where you are.
Until next time, I hope you remember that caring for yourself isn't something you have to earn.
It's something you deserve, simply because you're human.
Warmly, Shelley
